Guardians of the Valley, 30cm H x 67cm W x 26cm D, £1550.
We lived in the extraordinary Rhondda Valley for 12 years, at it’s head, surrounded by cliffs and established woodland. Decades ago the whole valley was a hell-hole of coal mines, brickworks and quarries. Now, after massive reconstruction, the rivers and waterfalls run clear again and nature is back, healing and drawing in the scars. This beautiful piece is about the centuries of dramatic, frequently deadly changes that happened across the South Wales Valleys and the forces that keep them alive.
Guardians of the valley are from the lithosphere and relate and integrate closely with the other spheres. ( The Throwdown at the Hoedown Series.)
Built in rich, black, architectural ceramic this sculpture is fully weather-proof and will last for centuries. The patina of raw earth pigments in a binder will deepen over time as the natural world adds to it.
